Five Things for January 26

  1. I got this incredible Magic Puzzle Co puzzle on Friday from my OG Mom Group Secret Santa and started it this weekend. Read: stayed up until 11:30 on Saturday night doing the outline and WTF there are too many edge pieces? And a random giant piece?? And Harry Potter and his gang, and Waldo, and an extra packet (that also sounds like puzzle pieces?!) to open when I’m done, and…this puzzle is SO MUCH FUN. It’s giving me life, truly. I puzzle for a bit after my workout once the kids are in bed, with an audiobook in my ears (current listen: WHEN THE ANGELS LEFT THE OLD COUNTRY, thoughts to follow), sometimes with a glass o’ wine on the side…it’s bliss. And then suddenly it’s way past my bedtime and I have to pull myself away. So worth it. Even Ambrose is into it — this morning he woke up at 6am and asked to work on it. Fine with me, bud.
  2. I forgot to mention last week when I gushed about Caroline Girvan — Jarrod and I have figured out a truly wonderful evening routine where he does all the bedtime work and I get to disappear to work out. This all happened because we were all of us (all of us adults, at least, and by all I mean also Jarrod’s parents, because this became an issue at Christmas) stressed out about the fact that the girls were demanding I lay with them for “’bout ten minutes” each during bedtime, and try as I might to turn this into my PM reading time, they wanted to jabber on and generally didn’t love it when it was time for me to leave. I love it because I get essentially every evening after dinner f-r-e-e free, AND I feel less resentful when I have to manage mornings on my own because Jarrod sleeps in and then rushes off to chapel after his prayers. Win-win, baby.
  3. This week’s work on my 52 Weeks of Cooking & Baking challenges included a batch of South African Picnic Bread, which was fun and easy to make and turned out…okay. Not spectacular or anything, but I’m still going to slice it and freeze it, and hopefully remember to dig it out when I want a quick and hearty breakfast. (I haven’t tried it toasted though. Maybe toasting it is the key here…) I also made Anadama bread — much bigger fan. It’s delicious and molasses-y. Makes great toast.
  4. I don’t talk too much about work, but I’m nearing my first anniversary of starting at AS. I mean, it’s still a couple months away, but I only have like two or three payments left to Formation, so I’m getting a lil antsy. (Seriously, the extra $984/month is going to be sooo nice for our budget.) In any case, this past sprint I got to work on an all new (for me, I mean) section of the program, dealing with tags that map measurements exported from an ultrasound machine to fields in our program. Specifically — I got to fix an ugly stored procedure that still had issues mapping some tags and make it just a little bit better. It was super fun! With the exception of one huge awful feature I never want to think about again, I’ve spent the past year mostly working on bug fixes. I really feel comfortable there. A calculation isn’t coming out right? Lemme take a look. Diving into a new section of the program is always a little scary, but this was downright fun. I got to write a good bit of new code to fix the issue with the stored procedure/bring a lot of the logic into the C# layer, and it was tons of fun figuring my way around the problem. All this is to say — I regret nothing. Diving into this career was the best decision of my life.
  5. I finally started watching Only Murders In the Building this weekend, and guyz, I’m all in. Jarrod’s parents have been wanting us to watch it with them for a while, and I’d heard enough good things that I was willing to give it a watch too, but “when do I have time?” (Truly.) But the episodes are only a half hour long, which is very manageable. AND IT’S SO FUN! And gory! And wonderful!
