Five Things for February 9

Snappy subhead here.

  1. I’ve been forcing my way to the end of Navigating Early by Clare Vanderpool — I’m nearly there, and may actually finish tonight. It was a 2014 Printz honor winner but guys, I am not feeling it. At all…but with a caveat. This is a book I would have put down hours ago if I was any better at DNFing books. Jack, the main character, is SUCH a jerk to Early, basically the entire book. Early says something and he’s always like “Okay yeah sure Early,” and Early is **literally always right about the thing**. Plus he just has no personality. But since I can’t manage to ever abandon a book, I discovered that all the plot elements come together really beautifully at the end, so I will begrudgingly be bequeathing (bebebe) this one three stars, instead of the 2 I had planned.
  2. Sunday nights are now officially Breakfast for Dinner according to The New Meal Rhythm I Will Certainly Be Sticking To (TM). This past Sunday I made crepes in fulfillment (sort of) of the 52 Weeks of Cooking: Normandy requirement. They were actually so super easy to make! And pretty delicious — I used Mark Bittman’s recipe from How to Cook Everything. No photos were taken. Just trust me. Yum.
  3. BLIND ITEM! There’s currently a celebrity hanging around campus whose name rhymes with Fall Mud and with whom I may have been obsessed since the first time I saw Clueless as a wee teenie-bopper. I haven’t personally set eyes on him (sigh) but there’s apparently a room reserved in the library where only he is allowed to be, heh. He’s part of a movie being filmed on one of the streets behind the campus? In any case, St Vlad’s has allowed the film to use our campus as a staging/parking area or whatever, so yes there are just…trucks everywhere. And this mythical man. Just. Floating around very very close to me at all times.
  4. Work-related item: on Monday at the end of standup we got news of some dev team shakeups. Nothing serious — just losing one guy, gaining some others, etc, but for someone who doesn’t like change…wahhh! Stop it. I! Don’t! Like! Change! (From the woman who has lived in…counts fingers…10 separate locations since graduating from college.)
  5. This week has been weird — stomach scope for Jarrod, 3-year appointment for Liesl, the Hundredth Day of School in all its wacky glory, a half-day today with a parent-teacher conference for Theodora, oh and report cards being released today! I’ve managed, though, to watch a few more episodes of Only Murders in the Building and it’s getting intense…eep! The Dimases were up to no good, but who killed Tim?! In any case, I watched the silent episode (S1E6, I think?) and it was really cool. Very well-executed. Although not necessarily the episode to try and watch while idly doing other work!
