Five Things for February 16

The Week that Looney-Tuned Its Way Into Existence

  1. HOW BOUT THEM CHIEFS?? I picked a good time to have in-laws who live in Kansas City. I did not, however, pick a good time to live on the East coast…phew. Monday morning/mostly all of Monday, actually, was brutal. To make matters slightly worse, the kids had the day off of school. Good, in that I could sleep all the way in until 7am and didn’t have to worry about getting them ready to go, but bad in that I then had to deal with them for the rest of the day. Aaaand then there was a snow day called for the next day in the afternoon. Before there was even a drop of precipitation. (I am typing these words at 3:43 on Monday afternoon and am highly doubting we will get anything. But please, Mr. Weatherman. Go ahead and prove me wrong.)
  2. As you can see from the photo…I was proven wrong.
  3. Ambrose ripped through Wayside School Is Falling Down at the end of last week and this weekend. I am so incredibly proud of him — he found it on the bookshelf and just…went for it. (He had started The Magic Finger the previous weekend but was unsatisfied at its shorter length and wanted to try something longer!) The Wayside School books, and really any/all Louis Sachar books were my favorites growing up. It’s so neat to see my son learning to love to read now too. We ordered him the next Wayside School book he requested, in accordance with the family policy of one of Jarrod’s friends — you get a new book when you finish the one you’re reading. Very fun.
  4. This week in 52 Weeks of Cooking & Baking Craziness: I made Maple Syrup Muffins (Heavenly) from Muffin Mania, a cookbook my parents got I think as a wedding gift (?) and which was apparently “the number one selling cookbook in the 80’s”, at least according to this page. They were…well…kind of a disaster, if I’m being completely honest. First of all, they’re way too sweet. 1/2 cup sugar PLUS 1/2 cup maple syrup? Too. Much. And this isn’t even including the recommended glaze that I didn’t end up making! Second, I only managed to get 9 muffins out of the recipe, but they puffed up way big and 7 of the 9 leaked over into muffin ugliness. (See photo.) The recipe was sparsely written and didn’t warn me about that at all. Third, they were pretty crumbly — due to no egg in the batter? Not sure. They taste really good though, and will be a good springboard for a healthier version — perhaps using whole-wheat or freshly-milled flour, less sugar, an egg…etc.
  5. I finally finished the first season of Only Murders in the Building! Glorious ending. I was taken off-guard by who the murderer was but…at the same time, the thought had crossed my mind for various reasons earlier in the season (one relating to the notes left…) but I thought, “No way would that person be the murderer…” Eep! I’m sad that **ahemnospoilers** won’t be returning to the show though. For, you know. Obvious reasons.
