9/18: September Progress Update

Oh hi, gingerbread cake. You tasted okay.

I told you I’d write one post a week, and darn it…I will.

Trust me, I’ve wanted to update but dude, when have I had the time? Between 5am Morning Pages and exercise and getting the kids breakfast and off to school and emptying the dishwasher and work and exercising the kids’ extra energy out and making dinner and doing bedtime and packing lunches and cleaning up the house and squeezing in whatever amount of pleasure reading I can…woof. I’ve been busy.

So how am I finding time to finally bash out this update now?

And since a magician never reveals her secrets, we’ll move right along. I thought I’d spend five or ten minutes writing about my goal progress for the month of September (so far). It’s a good way to keep me on track! So, here’s the breakdown:

Reading

  • I’ve read 2 out of the 3 non ClassicQuest books I was aiming to read this month: Challenger Deep (good), Maisy Chen’s Last Chance (delightful), and a couple hours-worth of The Lesbiana’s Guide to Catholic School (great so far, I’m loving the voice but I’m worried about Yami). On track.
  • I’m also on track with my ClassicQuest reading. I finished Ethan Frome pretty quickly and am about 1/3 of the way into A House for Mr. Biswas. I’m honestly not enjoying it too much, and I’m not sure if I want to DNF it. It’s just kind of sad. Lots of fights that I feel like I don’t even understand the context to.
  • As far as reading to the kids goes, things have been a bit slow. By the time we finish dinner, go outside to play, and come back in to get ready for bed, all our evening time is gone. I’m going to try and see if we can’t make it outside right at 5pm when my work ends, and then roll straight from dinner into prayers and getting ready, followed by some read-aloud time. We’ll see.

Writing

  • I haven’t kept up with this blog. Obviously. But I’m here now, and I’m hoping to start putting out some more 5 Things posts, along with regular check-ins like this one.
  • I haven’t written my September Hodgepodge of Huffmans update, but then, it’s not time to yet! Win?
  • Novel-writing is also going slowly, but not for lack of trying to fit it in. I’ve got about 2,500 words written. I just charged up the Hemingwrite and I’m going to try and take it to the playroom/outside to write a bit while the kids play.

Fitness

  • I’ve been mostly doing great on my Thinner Leaner Stronger workouts! Usually I manage to get at least three in per week, but it works for me. I’m tired AF ALL the time, so it’s about all I can do to get myself up at 5am 3 days a week. It feels great every time I go, even if I am dragging the rest of the day. Definitely a confidence boost.
  • As for getting back to pre-Ambrose weight, well…that’s a work in progress. I started Noom last week and had a great first week, but the weekend killed all the progress I made. So, we’ll see. I definitely don’t hate it, and I’m willing to continue with it. Just gotta lay off the Fika cake.
  • So far, all rings have been closed, every day of September! I do have a trip to Canada coming up, so I’m not sure how the ring thing will work on a 8-hour 12 hours with all the children-mandated stops drive.

Other Stuff

  • I did finish my fall embroidery. Finally! After…three years of seasonal leisure plans? Now I need to move on to the rainbow sampler I bought last Christmas, but I’ll wait until October to start it.
  • Haven’t bought a plant — yet. I did finish The New Plant Parent though. I just need to get to a nursery.
  • I made my first recipe from Fika and Hygge, and it turned out…okay. You can see the result above. Pretty, but flat. I didn’t have three seven-inch cake pans, but I feel like even if I did all the batter wouldn’t have made as tall a cake as is pictured in the cookbook. Also, the instructions told me to cook the cake for 15 minutes on 350F. I went with my gut and upped it to 25 minutes and it came out as expected. Maybe slightly dry, but at 15 minutes it would have been goop.
  • I wanted to do one cocktail a week, but I can’t find the fun vintage cocktail book I was planning on using (I think it may have been left in storage) and we left most of our bar in Kansas City — honestly, there isn’t really room for it here. So, maybe this isn’t the year for a fun cocktail quest. (Or MAYBE I could buy ANOTHER fun vintage cocktail book.) But I’ll document when I do have some good ones. Just gotta get my hands on a bottle of Grand Marnier to make all the drinks I’ve been looking at. Why is it always orange liqueur I’m missing anyway??
  • Haven’t touched CS100, but to be fair, it’s not in this season’s leisure plan…
