My 2022 Reading Plan

It’s a TBR list, but not my usual formula.

Last year I did great on my TBR list. But by October, I was burnt out. My usual reading formula has me reading all the Printz, Newbery, and National Book award winners in YA for the previous year, as well as a previous previous year. (If that makes any sense. I’m working my way backwards.) I also read some adult award-winners, chip away at my ClassicQuest list, do some re-reads, read some nonfiction, and even read some of-the-moment books.

It should work, but it leaves very little room for actually letting my reading take me where it will. Instead of being able to pick what I want, when I want it, I find myself sticking to the prescribed list and grinding my way through stuff I’m just not interested in, and which tends to depress me (because all of these books are issues books, man).

I’m an adult, dang it. I can read what I want to. If I get a chance, maybe I’ll pick off what I want from my pre-composed 2022 TBR list. But this year, here’s what I’d like to read:

  • Our Thoughts Determine Our Lives
  • On the Acquisition of the Holy Spirit
  • The Shining
  • Silence of the Lambs
  • The People You Meet on Vacation
  • 7 Days in June
  • Fresh
  • The Secret Commonwealth
  • The Master and his Emissary
  • Jesus and John Wayne
  • Deep Work
  • Caste
  • How to Do Nothing
  • The Joy of Missing Out
  • How to Read Nature
  • Last Child in the Woods
  • Death Comes to Pemberley
  • Don’t Make Me Count to Three
  • Cultish
  • Intuitive Eating
  • Laying Down the Rails
  • Ray Bradbury’s short stories
  • Gone with the Wind
  • ClassicQuest
  • ClassicQuest
  • ClassicQuest
  • ClassicQuest
  • ClassicQuest
  • How to Win Friends and Influence People
  • How to Talk So Kids Will Listen & Listen So Kids Will Talk

I’ve bolded the last two, because these are my year-focus books — the book I’ll read, chew on, and truly try to apply.

This is only 30, and my Goodreads goal is 52. So I might be able to squeeze in some more? I don’t know. We’ll see how this year shakes out timewise. Anyway, like I said — I’m letting the wind take my reading where it will, so I’m not forcing myself to fill in the last 22ish.

And for once, I’m kind of excited about this year’s reading. Stay tuned for monthly updates of how my reading is going, as per the usual schedule!
