Two Cocktails Down

Maybe not old-timey tho.

But hey, two fun cocktails are two fun cocktails! Perhaps I can catch up on my 52 Weeks of Cocktails quest. Or something.

The first one I enjoyed last Friday night. I was feeling something apple-cidery, since that’s what we had in the fridge, and I thought it would be fun. But I didn’t want a spiked hot cider, I wanted a cider cocktail. Cold and sharp.

So I kind of came up with this recipe:

52WoC #1: Em’s Spicy Cider Sipper*

Ingredients:
2 oz apple cider
2 oz whiskey
Squeeze ginger paste
Pinch cinnamon

Directions:
Mix all ingredients together and serve in an old-fashioned glass with a big ice ball. (Or ice cubes, if that’s what you have.) Garnish with an apple slice

*Note: It’s not actually spicy at all. But Jarrod and I have taken to calling adult beverages of any sort “spicy drinks” because it keeps the kids out of them. (Because, naturally, why would they want to have anything to do with anything spicy?)

If I make this again in the future (and I probably will!) I have some tweaks in mind. First, I’d add something vanilla-y. Maybe vanilla vodka, but we don’t keep that in our house so I’m not sure. It might be great with spiced rum, too — get that vanilla flavor in there. Also, I’d add maybe a tablespoon of lemon juice to add depth to the sweetness. Oh, and next time I’ll try shaking this and serving it up, but we didn’t have any ice on hand when I made it, aside from our giant ice balls. TL;DR: it’s a work in progress. But good for fall!

Sundays I’ve gotten into a bit of a rhythm of liturgy -> church school -> nap/rest time at home -> prepping meals for the week (thanks, Prepdish!) (Not a sponsor, just a fan.) Last Sunday I ran into a time crunch because of the seminary Fall Festival, so I had to complete the meal prep after the kids were in bed.

To make it more bearable, I made myself a Trader Joe’s-inspired Jam Jar cocktail, and yes, it is decided. I will be doing this every Sunday during meal prep time in the future.

52WoC #2: Jam Jar Cocktail

Ingredients:
1 1/2 tbsp jam (or the dredges of a jar, if you have one on hand, I didn’t)
2 oz vodka
1 Tbsp lime juice
Club soda, to finish

Directions:
Stick the first three ingredients in a jam jar filled with ice cubes. Screw the lid on and shake ‘er up. Fill any remaining space with club soda and drink it right out of the jam jar.

I made this with raspberry jam, and it was utterly delicious, although I would recommend stirring in the club soda a bit after you add it, because it was mostly soda at the top and delicious jammy vodka a the bottom. Also, TJ’s recommends lemon juice “or whatever citrus you have on hand,” so if I make this one again I’ll try it with lemon. But there was literally a dying lime half on the counter, so I went with it.
