Five Things for March 15

Why u so windy, March?

  1. The start of Daylight Saving Time has thrown me off, man. Not my kids — me. Plus the fact that I stayed up way too late on Sunday night watching the Oscars (more below) and then couldn’t get to sleep for two hours after that…I was a mess the first half of the week, man. Finally on Tuesday night I went to bed at 8pm and seem to have finally reset things (though I am only writing these words on Wednesday evening). Down with time changes!
  2. Great Lent is finally at hand! It’s arriving extra extra late this year; Pascha isn’t until May 5. I’m simultaneously excited for a much-needed reining-in of my eating (and life) habits and also, you know. Not really looking forward to the inevitable drudgery of the next 7 weeks. But I’m committing to really upping my fasting game this go round. I know, fasting from food isn’t all Great Lent is about, but I’ve been pretty lax the past few years, and there’s something really special about noshing your way through a basket of stuff you’ve missed out on over the past two months at 2am after the Paschal service, like some sort of crazed and over-tired Very Hungry Caterpillar. I’m also going to order a daily Lenten devotional; it sounds like our downstairs neighbor is going to hold a Lenten book club based around it!
  3. I recently stumbled on a video from the Bullet Journal YouTube account that was actually really helpful. Why haven’t I watched official BuJo videos before? This one was on rapid logging. Why I haven’t I officially tried rapid logging before? Hah. Life, as I mentioned before, has been a little bit hectic, so I haven’t had time to try out rapid logging or watch any more of the official BuJo videos, but hopefully I can dive in soon. (Tonight, even! It’s 7:26 and all I have to do after this is a bit of photo sorting, my Pilgrim’s Progress reading, and, oh yeah…a scene sketch for the novel I’m writing. And pack Theodora’s lunch for tomorrow, and set up my bullet journal for tomorrow, and now it’s inexplicably 7:55…I am so behind.) In any case, it’s a really neat idea: between activities, jot down a few notes about how things went, how you’re feeling, what needs to happen next, etc. Then move on.
  4. My one-year anniversary at AS was Wednesday! I think I’ve Five-Things’ed on this before, but now the official official anniversary has happened, eep! I celebrated with a lavender-topped iced oatmilk matcha and an Impossible breakfast sandwich. #TreatYoself. One more month of ISA payment left and I’ll be free!
  5. You know what, I’m not going to recap the Oscars viewing experience (fun, a little boring, I was sidetracked by the Kate Middleton Mother’s Day photo debacle and completely missed that Al Pacino had announced the Best Picture winner). Instead I’m going to be a little excited about swim lessons for the kids. TL;DR, they’re starting at the local Jewish Community Center a week from tomorrow. The longer version is that the kids are so afraid of water (but love it, they just need to learn to effin’ swim) and I’ve been too overwhelmed with life here to find swim lessons for them again. The other day I passed a Jewish Community Center and remembered that my sister-in-law used to have a membership to one as her gym, so I thought — huh. Maybe they have swim lessons. They do! And enrollment was literally a few days later! Got ’em in Saturday morning classes. I’m excited. They also have a gymnastics program, but the pre-K program was full. NBD, I’ll get Theda into the K program in the fall. Meanwhile, oof. I am several dollarbucks poorer now. But if my kids learn to keep themselves alive in water, I don’t care what the cost is. Take all my money.
