The Now and The Future

I’m back, babyyyy.

Oh hello. It’s me again, reviving my blogging for the 18th time, because I can’t not.

I’ve been busy — clearly. As it turns out, I got a job! No, not a cushy Google position, but I’m okay with that. It’s a software engineering position, and for that, in this current job climate, I am eternally grateful. Also, I actually love the company — I work at AS Software, an ultrasound reporting company. Our software is what sonographers use to record all their fancy measurements, capture photos, send reports, etc. The software is pretty legacy, so I’ve been doing a lot of what I call “code surfing” and bug fixes. (And I adore C#/any strongly-typed languages now.)

The people are great, I have health insurance (!), and I’m paid on salary versus hourly, which has always been my biggest goal career-wise. Woohoo, I did it! The greatest thing, though, is that there’s an actual office in New Jersey, about a half hour away from St. Vlad’s. So even though the position is hybrid and based in Overland Park, I’ll be able to transfer when we move in (gulp) 3 weeks or so.

So that’s the now. What about the future?

The future is, our family living in a tiny apartment in Yonkers, NY, trying to survive while Jarrod attends seminary. Yes! We finally got our apartment assignment, and it’s actually one of the cushier apartments on campus, so that’s the last time you’ll hear me complain. It’s full of windows, which I’m pumped about. And we have a balcony!

Jarrod attending seminary is actually the reason I’m coming back to this blog. I’m starting a Follow the Huffmans blog (you can find it here, but as of this writing there’s not much to see) and realized that I wanted to write more than just monthly life updates, but that the family blog probably wasn’t the right place for that.

And so, I’m back here! I’m hoping to share all my knowledge about hacking a small apartment with a large(ish) family, as well as other family-type things. But wait, there’s more! I just started getting back into lifting with the Thinner Leaner Stronger program, so I’ll share updates about that, probably. And of course, software engineering stuff — I’m planning on slowly working my way through the Backend Developer Roadmap, and to augment my learning I’ll take notes and share ’em here. (And maybe, someday, if I finish that I can do the Frontend Developer Roadmap!)

So. Life is alright. We have a way to get us through seminary financially, thank God, and we also have a very healthy supplement to that paycheck via Jarrod’s VA disability payment, thank God again — I didn’t realize how spoiled I’d been by all of Jarrod’s tax-free allowances in the military! (Not to mention free healthcare, but I did at least have an inkling of how good we had it with regards to that.) It looks like we’re gonna make it through this thing!
